Students will examine information about the explosion in data and the effect on society.

Prior Knowledge & Skills  

Students:

• have logged onto the classroom computers,

• have accessed Internet sites, and

• have created simple web pages.

Planning Notes  

• The purpose of this activity is to help students develop a general problem solving approach that can be applied to both programming and non-programming situations.

• Review available off-line career resources within the school.

• Consult with the school librarian or guidance counselor about sources of career information.

• Gather local HTML tutorials and resources.

• Survey the class about web skills and plan to spend a day on creating simple web pages if needed.

Students will be given time to:

• reflect on their progress/ understanding/areas of concern based on teacher/student/peer suggestions (e.g. after test take up)
• journalize their reflections
• reflect on the work of others

For Learning

The teacher will

• observe student progress/performance
• ask questions based on student work
• check homework correctness/completion when appropriate
• review formative quiz results

Of Learning

The teacher and students gather assessment information based on specific expectations outlined for this activity including:

• a formative assessment of problem definition skills in the form of in-class discussion,

• a summative assessment (Appendix 1.4.7) of the data management plan, and

• a summative assessment in the form of a problem definition quiz.

• a summative assessment (Appendix 1.4.8) rubric for the privacy letter
