Description

Students look at common ergonomic problems and try to develop solutions.

Specific Expectations
D1.1 describe the negative effects of computer use on the environment (e.g., creation of e-waste, excessive use of paper resulting from unnecessary printing of files and emails, heavy power consumption) and on human health (e.g., exposure to radiation, musculoskeletal disorders, eye strain, mental health problems resulting from social isolation, various health consequences of reduced activity levels);
D1.2 identify measures that help reduce the impact of computers on the environment (e.g., lab regulations, school policies, corporate and government policies promoting paperless workplaces and computer recycling and reuse) and on human health (e.g., ergonomic standards);
D1.3 describe ways in which computers are or could be used to reduce resource use and to support environmental protection measures (e.g., computer modelling to reduce use of physical resources; management of natural resources);
D1.4 identify government agencies and community partners that provide resources and guidance for environmental stewardship (e.g., local community recycling centres, private companies that refurbish computers, printer cartridge recycling programs).

Planning Notes

  • Download checklists and evaluation forms from http://ergo.human.cornell.edu/cutools.html to evaluate keyboard, workstation, desk, chair and seating evaluation forms, as well as the male and female muscolo-skeletal discomfort questionnaire, left and right hand discomfort questionnaires.

    • Prepare one package for each group of 3-4 students depending on the size of the class.

  • Gather specific information from articles on the relationship between improper ergonomics and occurrences of musculo-skeletal disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome, other hand and wrist problems, back pain, and eyestrain. (See Resources for useful sites.)

  • Gather specific information on guidelines for good ergonomics: proper light source, keyboard format, seating distances from monitors, posture, chair requirements, required breaks, brief hand, arms and neck exercises done on an hourly basis, proper seating heights, etc. See Resources for useful sites.

Teaching/Learning Strategies

  • have students generate a list of areas where health and safety problems can happen with computer that describe the negative effects of computer use on
    •  the environment
      • creation of e-waste,
      • excessive use of paper resulting from unnecessary printing of files and emails,
      • heavy power consumption
    • human health
      • exposure to radiation,
      • musculoskeletal disorders,
      • eye strain,
      • mental health problems resulting from social isolation,
      • various health consequences of reduced activity levels
  • have students demonstrate or find examples of these problems
  • look at ways to solve these problems by identifying measures that help reduce the impact of computers on the
    • environment
      • lab regulations,
      • school policies,
      • corporate and government policies promoting paperless workplaces, and
      • computer recycling and reuse
    • and on human health
      • ergonomic standards
