Representing Data  

Unit 1 Activity 8

Time:  160 minutes

Description  

Students will examine how data is represented in a computer. Representing decimal numbers as binary and hexadecimal numbers, simple addition and subtraction, and the ASCII and Unicode systems will be examined.

A1.2 demonstrate an understanding of how a computer uses various systems (e.g., binary, hexadecimal, ASCII, Unicode) to internally represent data and store information;

Prior Knowledge & Skills  

Students 

  • understand how to search the Web.

  • have keyboarding skills and experience using a mouse;

  • have knowledge of how to double click, select program icons, and scroll in the windows screen.

  • check homework correctness/completion when appropriate
  • review formative quiz results

  • formative evaluation by listening to students use the terminology in this activity

Accommodations  

  • print out copies of the vocabulary for students
