Topic sentence
- tells what the paragraph is about
Specific supporting details (SSD)
- support, prove, demonstrate the idea introduced in the topic sentence
- should include no extraneous ideas
- can include: logical statements, facts, examples, quotations...
Transitions
- words and phrases that connect smoothly the supporting sentences in the paragraph and
make them "stick together"
- can include: thus, therefore, however, but, furthermore, in addition, in contrast...
Concluding statement
- may summarize the arguments presented
- highlights the topic sentence
- makes the paragraph "sound finished"
