Basic Paragraph Structure

The hamburger approach

Topic sentence

  • tells what the paragraph is about

Specific supporting details (SSD)

  • support, prove, demonstrate the idea introduced in the topic sentence
  • should include no extraneous ideas
  • can include: logical statements, facts, examples, quotations...

Transitions

  • words and phrases that connect smoothly the supporting sentences in the paragraph and make them "stick together"
  • can include: thus, therefore, however, but, furthermore, in addition, in contrast...

Concluding statement

  • may summarize the arguments presented
  • highlights the topic sentence
  • makes the paragraph "sound finished"
