1. What is the definition of the word “data”?
    
2. What units are used to measure data on computer systems?
    
3. When measure we use terms like “kilo”, “mega”, “giga”, etc. How big are these?
   Relate them to something tangible.
    
4. What items do we store on computers?
   E.g. medical images from CT scans
    
5. How much space is required to store all of this information?
   E.g. "When DreamWorks' first Shrek movie debuted in May 2001, it required about 6TB of capacity in DreamWorks' data centers. Eight years later, the studio's ...release, Monsters vs. Aliens, require[d] a bit more elbow room-as in 93TB of capacity." (source)
   Each finished DVD copy of the movie Monsters vs. Aliens also requires about a gigabyte of storage, the BluRay version about 7 gigabytes. Over 5 million DVD/BluRay copies have been sold (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2009/MVSA-DVD.php). That is at least 5 million gigs of storage for one movie alone.
    How much data do we have stored? How much space is needed for the original data?
   
   
6. What costs are involved in storing all of this data? Not all of the costs are monetary. Is there a cost to the environmental?
   
   
7. One other cost to keeping all this data could be our privacy and security. Here is a link to one program that collects information about you: PRISM (surveillance program). Argue either for or against the need for data collection. Give at least two supported reasons for your position.
