Using quotations

When you write an essay (or report), you want to make it informative. As a student, you want to display your knowledge of the subject. However, if you are just learning about the subject yourself you are going to have to do research. You will research what others have written on the subject, in order to gain knowledge. If, in your essay, you use someone else's thoughts or ideas, you must quote them. The quotation is used in an essay in order to make your essay more interesting and more accurate.

The proper way to quote in an essay is to:

  1. use quotation marks (" ") to surround the word-for-word line(s) you have used from the research.
  2. use them to support your own point, not to create a whole new one. Be sure to state how each quote relates to, or illustrates, your point.
  3. place them right into your sentence and they must be made grammatically correct.
  4. document the quote (see documentation section)
